Teachers

I was not taught

what being treated

fairly and justly

felt like

when I was most

readily able to learn it.

So I sought out

unfairness and injustice

everywhere I went

until I finally realized

I couldn’t change anyone else

but I could teach love to myself.

I plan to be the best teacher

I could ask for

so that when that person

ready to give and receive

in the ways we both deserve

happens across me,

I will already know the feeling

and the decision will be easy.
